Never give up

On February 27, 2017 I was thinking I’ve seen different videos of athletes pushing through to the end of the race when they barely have anything left in them.  I’ve also seen athletes have a really hard competition, and in the next one they come back even better than they were before.  I find those people to be inspirational.

This reminded me of one of my favourite Canadian male skaters growing up, Kurt Browning.  Every time I saw him skate on TV I was mesmerized by the jumps and the incredible footwork he did.  In 1988, Kurt Browning was amazingly the first skater in competition to do a quadruple jump, which will be a title he will always hold.  He always put personality into his skating competitions, which made it fun to watch.

During the 1994 Winter Olympics Kurt Browning was expected to win as he had come in first place at Worlds four times in his skating career.  I waited in anticipation as I watched him skate his short program.  It went from bad to worse.  He fell on a triple lutz and turned a double axel into a single.  You could tell when he finished that he felt awful.  I was in shock myself.  When he was later interviewed after the short program he was in tears as he knew he would never get an Olympic medal as this was his last year of competing.  At one point he said “sorry” to Canada as he felt he had let everyone down.

The fortunate thing is that with men and women’s staking competitions there are always two programs.  Kurt Browning was in 12th place after the short program.  He knew realistically he wasn’t going to be able to win a medal, but he could end his skating career on a good note.  I remember the long program being so different.  It seemed like the pressure to win was off his shoulders and he could be himself again.  I was really impressed with his skating and watched him engage the crowd.  It teared me up, but this time for happy tears as I was seeing the skater I knew and loved skating his heart out.

I could tell when he was finished he felt really good about the skate he did.  He ended up jumping up to 5th place.  I know that he did not win gold, but to jump up seven positions is a huge comeback.  To me it felt like he had won first place and I was so proud of the skater Kurt Browning had been.

I found as I thought back to those moments of Kurt Browning, it reminded me to never give up.  I know a lot of people make mistakes and have failures in their life, but if you quit before you finish, you will never know if the next time would be your come back time.  It’s important to remember that in life winning isn’t everything – doing your best is what counts.

Here’s a song about telling Our God that we are running for His heart and that you are a soul on fire with Him, and we are longing for His ways.  We are asking to have our joy restored, and in the darkness to lead us through until all we see is Him, and let us burn for our Lord and return to Him.
