Winter and Snow

I was thinking on December 18, 2016 that when it comes to winter I find it can be a friend at times as well as a bit of a bully.  One day it’s sunny and there’s fluffy snow outside, and the next day it’s super cold and the moment the wind hits your body it feels like it burns any skin that is exposed.  You may think then that winter is an awful season with how bitter cold it gets, but I find when you think through a child’s mind you may see it differently.

I remember when I was a kid I always got excited when winter was coming.  I was the child that would run outside in the middle of winter with just my shorts and short sleeve shirt on.  I know that sounds pretty crazy, but to me snow was one of the most amazing things ever.  Of course, the moment any teacher or parent saw that I was under dressed, they would bring me back inside to change me into my snow pants, hat, gloves, boots, and scarf.  I can understand why children can’t be bothered to wear the proper clothes during winter as it takes forever for them to put them on.  They probably think that the day will be over if they take the time to put on all their warm clothes.

I found that as a young child that snow was so fascinating.  Sometimes it could be so soft while other times it could be hard.  I couldn’t believe that they were both snow.  I loved it when I could run up on the snow banks and say that I was the queen of the castle as I felt like I was on top of the highest place in the world.  I never seemed to notice the cold and always wanted to be outside for hours.

Often when we become adults the excitement of winter starts to fade away for a lot of us. Lots of people seem to dread the first snow fall as that often signals that the winter season has begun.  This can mean worrying about slipping on ice and shovelling snow.  Also this is the time of year when the bills start to pile up with the extra presents that are bought.  And of course we often like to complain about the frigid temperatures during this season as well.

I understand complaining about the cold as I do it too, but if we see winter through the eyes of a child then often we can see the positives of it.  I find I like dressing up with really warm clothes as it’s almost like the clothes are giving me a constant hug, and if you are a hugger person, who wouldn’t like that? When it comes to snow I often notice how beautiful it is, especially when walking through the forest with snow covering all of the trees.

If you aren’t a person that likes to go outside in the cold or snow, you could always look at it from inside your place where you can snuggle up with a blanket and a hot chocolate.  All I’m saying is there is always negatives and positives to each thing in your life and I find when you dwell on the positives it helps you enjoy it more.  I thank God that He’s given us four seasons, so even when it does get quite cold, remember that if He didn’t, we’d have no snow! I’d miss it, and I think others would too.

Philippians 4:8    Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Here’s a song about our Lord working the good and that what we have in life isn’t too bad, and He loves us even if we feel unlovable.
