God reaches out in different ways

On August 21, 2016 I was thinking it’s amazing to see how God can show up in our lives in so many different ways.  It can be as obvious as reading His word in the Bible or as subtle as watching a sunset. Sometimes God can be reaching out to us and we don’t even know it as we are too busy with the day to day things in our lives.

I had a former supervisor that I volunteered with for a short time message me a couple of weeks ago about an opportunity to help out with one of her events she was working on.  She read one of my earlier posts on my one year recovery from my eating disorder.   She was looking for people that had lived through and recovered from an ED to have a picture taken of them as well as to answer in two sentences what life was like after recovering from an ED.

I was so surprised and touched that she would ask me as I had only known her for a short time.  I found out that the pictures were going to be taken by a professional photographer.  I was excited and nervous to hear about that. Everyone that was being photographed had to wear a plain black t-shirt.  I had two of them and I tried one on and then I tried the other one, and then I tried the first one back on.  Girls have this funny thing of sometimes trying the same shirt on multiple times to find out if it’s the perfect clothing to wear.

Since I knew that the photo wasn’t only going to be seen by me and the photographer I was getting a little more anxious about what top would work for me.  Normally I’m a type of person that takes a minute or so to figure out what I feel like wearing and I don’t generally try on something a bunch of times.  I guess it makes sense to change your habits a bit when it’s something important.

The past Sunday came and I decided to take the bus to the studio.  It was a warm morning with a very breezy wind. Since I knew it was windy I decide not to put my hair up as it would end up messing it up anyways.  Also I brought my brush with me so that I could fix it when I got there.  I felt pretty calm until I got there about 15 minutes early.  I find that when I’m about to step into a new situation I tend to get overwhelmed quickly.  I knew that the photos were going to be used for a good cause, so I took a big breath and buzzed in.

She answered, and let me in.  I went up four flights of stairs to a place where there was no air conditioning, which didn’t help since I was already sweating to begin with.  I got to the door and she let me into her studio.  She had me sit down since I was early.  I noticed right away after I met her that she made me feel completely at ease.  I was pleasantly surprised that she wanted to know a bunch about me.  I wasn’t expecting that, since I was only getting my photographs done with her for the event.

She had such a bubbly and laid back personality.  When she started to take my photo I was a little bit tense with my shoulders, as I was nervous and she quickly said how I was so easy to photograph.  That made me relax and at some point I actually started to have fun and put my true self into the photos.  I started to feel good about myself, and even, pretty.  She showed me a few of the photos she took after and I was surprised it was me.  I looked like a completely different person.  I looked like a confident, brave, excited woman.

After I left, I realized that God had showed up with me while I was at the studio.  He used this lady to show me how I really looked to everyone in this world.  I never imagined I would look as great as those photos that were taken.  As the photographer said there aren’t any bad looking people, just bad photography.  She was such an uplifting person, and I think God knew that I needed that to help me get back on track in my life.

Often God speaks to us through people, and I find it’s important in those moments to listen to what God has to say as He can often help us get out of a hole we are in.

Psalms 139:14    I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.  Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.

Here’s a song about

That when it feels like foes are against us, we will stand our ground.  We won’t fear the storm as our help is on the way as Our God will not delay and saving us as He’s our refuge and strength and His promise is true as Our God will come through for us.  Even when trouble surrounds us our soul will rest in Him and we lift our eyes up and my help comes from the Lord.
