Canada

I was thinking on Jul. 1, 2016 since Canada Day was just here that I’d talk about being Canadian.  When I think about what a Canadian looks like I can’t think of a specific group of people.  The reason is that there are a lot of people that immigrate to Canada.  If you think about it many generations ago everyone was an immigrant to Canada, except for the first nations people.  I love it because we have the whole world represented in our country.

Some of the stereotypes that other people think about us are true, while others are not.  We don’t all live in igloos and as much a small amount of Native Canadians have lived in igloos it’s not something they do all year long.  We are polite and do say “sorry” a lot.  It almost feels like the moment you hit Canadian soil you can’t help but say “sorry” ;).  We do have four seasons in Canada - a fifth if you include construction.  There always seems to be another road or highway that needs to be fixed.  Some people from outside of Canada may not realize this, but our summer does actually last for more than a few weeks. Usually.

I recently found out that ketchup chips is a Canadian flavour.  I can say that for those that haven’t tried them or do not have them in their country you are really missing out.  They are my favourite flavour! Red like our Canadian flag, and slightly spicy like us Canadians, and just plain yummy! You can’t go wrong with it.

As much as we aren’t the type of people that flaunt our national pride, we do know how to cheer on our fellow Canadians in sports.  The Toronto Raptors are the only Canadian team in the NBA.  When they got to the conference finals this year, the whole nation was behind them.  I admit I don’t watch that much sports, but even I had wanted to watch and hear how they were doing.  They had the slogan “We the North.” We were proud and boisterous when we were cheering on our team, and even when they lost in the end we were still so proud.

I also remember when we held the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver our whole country came together again to cheer on our Canadians.  I think that some other nations were surprised by how loud and exited we became as some people thought we were quiet and reserved.  I actually ended up being one of the torchbearers for those Olympics.  It was such an amazing thing to do.  To be carrying the fire for our country and thinking about what an incredible nation we are was one of the best feelings I’ve experienced.  I was so proud to be Canadian in that moment.

I also love that in our national anthem we mention God in part of the song that says “God keep our land”.  I believe that God appreciates us acknowledging Him and in that we are accepting that God will take care of our country.

Canada is the second largest country in the world at least for landmass.  We have such a beautiful nation.  It goes from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean and north to the Arctic Ocean.  We have mountains on the west, prairies in the middle, forests all around, the Arctic up north, French Canadians in the middle, fishing to the east and west, many cities along the south, and there are many other aspects of our country.

I think Canada is the best place in the world to live.  Of course I am going to be biased since I am Canadian, but what’s not to love? We have great people, public health care, a great educational system, lots of places to explore in our country and I have to admit it for myself at least I even like snow.  Sure, my favourite season is summer because of how hot it gets, but I also love snow as it’s so pretty and so wonderful to walk through when it is big puffy snow coming down. And of course you can go skating too. That’s just awesome.

In all that I’d like to say to my fellow Canadians Happy 149th Birthday Canada! Canadians make this nation what it is, which means you are all awesome people!!

Psalm 33:12    Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom He has chosen as His heritage!

Here’s a good song about wanting life to be easy, and wondering why pain is part of us, that is seems like nothing is going right, and life just hurts so much, but our God is here, and He is real and the one that we can trust.  And even if it hurt, and it’s hard and even when all falls apart, we’ll run to Him as He’s the lover of our soul and healer of our scars and He steadies our heart.

We don’t have to worry as He has us in the palm of His hand.  And even if things aren’t steady and broken they happen the way He plans.  We remember that He is here and is real, and we know we can trust Him.
